Small Flowered Willow Herb
Renal and urinary disorders, skin diseases, chronic intoxication of all kinds, and especially liver disease retire when faced with Small Flowered Willow Herb and Spiny Cocklebur.
Small Flowered Willow Herb
Under this name are known several related species: Epilobium hirsutum, with red-purple flowers, Epilobium montana, white-rose delicate flowers, which grows near the mountains, Epilobium parviflorum, with very small flowers that prefer water banks, Epilobium angustifolium, which resembles the previous species, but that has very narrow leaves.
All these species have roughly the same therapeutic properties - as evidenced by their similar chemical composition and through laboratory studies that highlighted their efficiency in the same diseases.
All willow herb species contain flavorglycosides, especially derivatives of kaempferol, quercetin, and myricetin. Epilobium parviflorum also contains b-sitosterol, various esters of sitosterol, and sitosterol glucoside have been detected.
These are the compounds considered to be the active ingredients of Saw Palmetto, another major herb used for treating the prostate. Gallic-acid derivatives are also present. Gallic acid and ellagitannins are considered to be the actives associated with the drinking of green tea.
Two of these macrocyclic ellagitannins, oenothein A and oenothein B, have been identified as the main constituents responsible for the inhibition of 5-alpha-reductase and aromatese enzymes. These enzymes are considered to play key roles in the cancer of the prostate.
This explains the antihyperandrogenic effects that may be useful in the prevention and treatment of BPH, as well it supports the use of the extract in the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer.
Preliminary (in vitro) studies at the Prostate Center of Vancouver found that very low concentrations of an extract from small-flowered willow herb tea, in the micrograms per ml level, was among the most active ever seen against abnormal cells and growths of the prostate.
Several extracts from Epilobium parviflorum, were evaluated in biochemical assays with 5-alpha-reductase and aromatase, two enzymes involved in the etiology of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

In his excellent book "The World of Herbs", Professor Constantin Parvu tells how he cured himself of chronic persistent hepatitis with this plant and natural diet. It is interesting that after 18 years of treatment with this plant, in terms of intense work and of advanced age, the disease has not returned.
Also, natural therapist John Groza says that he sought in Varciorog - a romanian village in Bihor county, famous for how local people treat advanced forms of cirrhosis, this wonder plant. Well, local people showed him the Small Flowered Willow Herb witch he later used in spectacular healing cases.
In liver diseases, Small Flowered Willow Herb is very effective in combination with bitter plants, which greatly enhances its favorable action on the liver.

Collecting and drying
Use the aerial part from all species of willow herb and gather it when it is blossoming in August. Harvesting is done during dry weather, by cutting the plant stem above the root (the root will grow a series of shoots untill Autumn, ensuring continuity of the species).
Drying is done in a mid-depth layer, in shaded and well ventilated places, so the plants don't heat up and get mouldy.
Three simple forms of administration:
Tincture - except for very serious liver disease and malignant tumor, it is the ideal form of administration, because on the one hand, it draws very good the active principles, and on the other hand, it is assimilated rapidly by the body, with immediate effects.
It is obtained from the dried plant powder (by grinding with electric coffee grinder). Fill half a jar with powder and the rest with 70 degrees alcohol. Close the jar tightly and let it soak for 10 days, then filter through gauze in small dark bottles. Administration is done on an empty stomach: Take one teaspoon diluted in half a glass of water four times a day.
Powder - it is used mainly in advanced liver diseases, when no alcohol is allowed. It is obtained by grinding the dried plants with an electric coffee grinder. Take a teaspoon 3-4 times a day. Keep the powder under the tongue for 10-15 minutes and then swallow it with water.
Infusion - is mainly used in tumor treatment, especially those with localization in the kidney, the urinary tract or prostate.
The most efficient way to obtain it is by soaking four teaspoons of powder in 1/2 liters / 16.9 oz of water for 12 hours. Strain it put the powder aside. Scald the plant left after filtering with another half liter / 16.9 oz of boiling water, then let it cool and strain.
Finally, after combining the two extracts you will get about one liter / 33.8 oz of preparation. Drink throughout the day in two or three rounds.
