Why Stres and Anxiety Are Your Worst Enemmies

I found out about psoriasis when I was 12 years old from a friend. He had scalp psoriasis and he kept his hair short or shaved his head completely in order to use an ointment.

He told me his big brother also had psoriasis and it was not a contagious disease, but a hereditary one.

Another thing I remember is that whenever he got angry the psoriasis would flare up. I didn't knew then, but I later found out that stress, anxiety or depression will trigger a flare.

psoriasis home treatmentAlthough he knows very much about natural psoriasis home treatment, my friend is on a constant lookout for psoriasis herbal treatment that has a more lasting effect.

Back to present days, I did my research to better understand the psoriasis causes and find a psoriasis herbal treatment without the side effects of NSAID's or corticosteroids.

What are psoriasis causes

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that causes thick red marks that look like scales to form. The thick scaling is due to an increase in the number of skin cells.

You usually get sore patches on your elbows, knees, scalp, back, face, palms and feet, but they can show up on other parts of your body.

Even in this day and age scientists couldn't agree on a specific set of psoriasis causes. Two of these theories consider psoriasis as an:

1. Autoimmune disease
Although the causes are not fully understood, specialists believe that the cause of psoriasis starts with the immune system. T cells, a type of white blood cell, usually protect the body against infection and disease by attacking bacteria and viruses.

However, when you have psoriasis, your T cells mistakenly attack your skin cells instead. Your body then produces other immune system responses, leading to swelling and rapid production of skin cells.

Two arguments that support this theory is that there are a great number of white blood cells in the abnormal skin layers and that psoriasis responds to immunosuppressive treatment (inhibits the immune system).

2. Intestinal permeability
Other studies researched the relation between psoriasis and intestinal permeability. The small bowel walls become thinner and easily penetrable, allowing toxic elements (fats, acids, bacteria) that normally would be eliminated from the digestive system, to enter the bloodstream in large amounts.

Therefore the amount of toxins becomes very large, and it accumulates in the body faster than can be eliminated. The body tries to eliminate this overload of toxins through the skin by sweat glands, thus forming psoriasis lesions.

What should an efficient psoriasis home treatment do?

1. Strengthen the immune system;

2. Clear the toxins out of the body;

3. Improve the symptoms - make the skin thinner, soften and soothe the skin and relieve the itching.

1. Strengthen the immune system

One herb recommended for strengthening the immune system is Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhannoides) which has also brought noticeable improvements in external treatment of psoriasis (ointment, tincture etc.).

You can also take herbs with general immune system stimulant properties like Pau d'Arco, Herb Robert or Garlic.

2. Psoriasis herbal treatment to clear the toxins

A detoxification cure for the liver and the small intestine should have good effects on psoriasis too. Use herbs like Dandelion, Celandine or Nettle.

Another way to prepare your body to fight the toxins is with antioxidants that have a direct action on free radicals (green tea, vegetables and fruits).

Pau d'Arco's bark is a well known adaptogen that improves the general health and aide in the optimal functioning of the immune system. It has immunostimulatory, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antiparasitic, antioxidant, analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Garlic is also a powerful antioxidant and immune stimulant.

Herb Robert (Geranium robertianum) is an adaptogen herb with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, astringent and antiseptic properties.

3. Soften and soothe the skin

Moisturize the skin naturally using Castor oil on larger lesions or a mixture of castor oil and olive oil for the smaller ones. This home treatment for psoriasis has a pronounced emollient (soothing and softening) and antipruritic (anti-itch) effect.

A more at hand treatment is Marigold cream which softens the scales and relieves itching.

Aloe Vera and Jojoba oil shampoos are considered excellent herbal remedies for scalp psoriasis because they help soften the skin and the scales.

Internal psoriasis home treatments

Follow a cure with Elder juice or Nettle tea. In a cup with Elder juice or Nettle tea put a teaspoon of Maria Treben's Swedish bitters and 5-10 drops of Burdock and Heartsease (Viola tricolor).

A natural treatment which gave good results in some cases is Propolis tincture. Take up-to 50 drops, 3 times a day, before meals.
