Even if you will feel better in the morning, take a medical examination, because ear ache can be symptom of more serious disease.

#1 Coltsfoot (Tussilago Farfara) leaves juice is an earache remedy with quite a long tradition in ear diseases.

It will reduce the pain and it is also a home remedy for ear infection (Otitis Media) because of its strong antimicrobial effect.

Drops recipe: Wash the leaves and put them in the blender with a litter water, so that the blender can do its job. Pour 2-3 drops of coltsfoot juice with a dropper in the ear, in the morning and in the evening.

Infusion: Make an herb mixture from equal parts of Coltsfoot, Plantain, Orange mullein, Chamomile, Pulmonaria officinalis. Put 2 teaspoons of this herb mixture in a cup of boiling water. Let it steep for 10 minutes then strain.

Drink 3 cups of tea daily sweetened with honey, in small sips.

#2 Swedish bitters. This home remedy for earache is a tradition in our family. We use it either as a home remedy for flu, to lower fever, sore throat or as a headache home remedy.

Pour 1 drop of antiseptic thyme oil in the ear. Soak a cotton ball in Swedish bitter and put it in your ear. Change it periodically when it dries.

Swedish bitters are also effective for tinnitus (ringing in the ears). My father had an untreated ear infection (Otitis media) as a small boy that caused him severe hearing loss.

He uses a hearing aid, but he says that Swedish bitter improved a little his hearing and also helped him with the ringing in the ears.

#3 Thyme has antiseptic properties and also brings earache relief.

Put 1-2 drops of thyme oil in 10 ml / 0.35 oz extra virgin olive oil. Heat the mixture gently then put a couple of drops in your ear.

#4 Common Houseleek / Hens and Chicks (Sempervivum tectorium) is known among ear ache remedies for its anti-inflammatory, antibiotic and healing properties. Its active principles are malic acid and alkaloids.

Drip into the ear 2-3 drops of leaf juice or tincture, 3 times per day.

To obtain juice, cut the fresh fleshy leaves longitudinally, and put them on the edge of a plate and leave them to drain. You can also squeeze them.

#5 Orange Mullein (Verbascum phlomoides) oil has antimicrobial properties and can relieve ear pain and inflammation.

Put the oil bottle in a pot with hot water and let it warm for a couple of minutes. Put 2 drops of warm oil (not hot) in the ear, 2-3 times per day.

#6 Olive oil is a classic for ear pain, and probably one of the most commonly used ear ache remedies.Put a few drops of warm oil (body temperature) in the ear, 2-3 times daily.

#7 Almond oil (Prunus amigdalus) is good for all diseases of the ear, ear aches, hearing loss or ear wax cleaning.

The same as above put a couple of warm oil drops (body temperature) in the ear, 2-3 times per day.

Olive oil and almond oil are also natural remedies to remove ear wax:

To clean the ear wax, put a couple of oil drops in the ear and place a cotton ball in the ear to keep the oil inside. Afterwards, spray warm water or a saline solution with a syringe. You can also use a sea water ear spray.

If you have a perforated eardrum or secretions, don’t put oil or saline solution in your ear. In this case, use a hydrogen peroxide solution to clean the ear wax.

#8 Mallow (Malva crispa) is a useful plant to use at the first signs of an ear ache.

Put 2 teaspoons of chopped herb in 1 cup of boiling water. Let it steep for 15 minutes, then strain. Wash the ear with this tea 2 times daily. After the wash, dry the ears thoroughly with cotton swabs.

#9 Lady's Mantle (Alchemilla vulgaris) is one of the ear ache remedies used mainly for its antiseptic properties.

Make an infusion from 1 tablespoon of chopped herb in 1 cup of boiling water. Let it steep for 15 minutes then strain.

Drink 3 cups of Lady's mantle tea if the secretion is greater than normal. Additionally, you can put a couple of Lady's mantle tea drops in the ear with a dropper to wash the ear and disinfect it.

#10 Chamomile is an earache remedy used both for ear washes, as well as in poultices, to alleviate the pain.

Put dried chamomile flowers in a small gauze bag on a heated cover over a steam bath. Apply the chamomile poultice on the painful ear and keep it for 10 minutes. Repeat 2 times a day.

Ear hygiene tips and a word of caution

* Take care of your ear hygiene. Clean the ear with antiseptic substances like hydrogen peroxide. You can also use antiseptic herbal teas or creams with chamomile, calendula or lady's mantle.

* Don't put hot oil in the ear. This can cause burns in the eardrum. Pain can intensify and your eardrum may break.

* If you have a secretion (a clear liquid, pus or blood) don’t put oil in the ear, because it may indicate an eardrum perforation. The oil can penetrate into the middle ear, triggering other irritations.

In this case, massage gently the ear and neck skin with a mixture made from 3 drops of oil (Cajeput, Lavender, Orange Mullein or St. John's Wort) in 2 tablespoons olive oil or sweet almond.
